Botticelli Drawings in SF

When I visited the Uffizi in Florence, the two painted I remembered most were the Primavera(Spring) and The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. So I had to visit the Legion of Honor when it was doing a retrospective on his drawings.

Viewing preparatory drawings allowed visitors to get a look into Botticelli's process. One disappointing thing about the exhibition was the lack of his most famous paintings.

Botecelli used drawings to anatomical accuracy, composition, and tone right. The highly detailed drawings as a precursor to painting showcase the craftsmanship and artistic foresight required to be remember 500 years after death. We see the enormous work that was done before the actual painting was started. We understand Bottecili was only a great painter but also a talented draftsman. Note, the drawing wasn’t done on a pure black or white paper. Using a mid tone paper allowed him greater control over light and shadow.

Another drawing that is study for future painting. Amazing to see the shading detail in the clothing. I wonder how much total time hours was spent on a painting. Also note, the paper is light yellowish brown. Allowed for highlights and shadows to added in. Bottecelli probably had appentices who probably did the initial sketches.

This guy had the right idea. I need to remember to bring a magnifying glass on my next trip to museum.
